about

‘29’ is a song about coping with mental health. Kevin’s initial focus when writing the lyrics was to try to relate the feeling of being 29 years old and feeling like he hadn’t achieved any of the things he had hoped to by his 30s. At the time of writing, Kevin had just left the military and his Special Forces team and after years of building that very difficult path, he was starting from scratch in a new city. There was a general feeling for all of us in We Demand Parachutes at that time that the traditional metrics of success didn’t define our current positions in life. ‘29’ addresses the anxiety and dread associated with obsessing with everyone else’s expectations of who you are.

lyrics

I’m tired of faking that I’m elated to go about my day
It keeps me up thinking it’s not enough, what I’ve put on the paper that day
I try to tell myself it’s alright
I set this car on fire to make light

29
I’ll be all right
29
I’ll be just fine
Yeah

Woah I’m stressed out
Try to get out of bed and just get dressed now
Anxiety the great killer of sleep
As I try to navigate the things that I can’t reach
And I can’t seem to beat
I try to tell myself it’s alright
I set a spark outside to see fire

29
I’ll be all right
29
I’ll be just fine
Watch this movie of my life and I wish it wasn’t mine
But maybe you could save me

Alright, alright, alright
I’ll set this car on fire to make light
Alright, alright, alright
I set a spark outside to see fire

29
And I’m still alive
And everything is fine
Everything is fine
And everything is fine
Everything is fine

Rewrite the movie of my life with an ending that I like
And maybe I can save me
